Assistive Technology

We use headlines for content and aria roles for the underlying system. We will work more on keyboard accessibility.

Notes on operation with assistive technologies

You can actively operate ILIAS with assistive technologies and perform interactions. You can operate ILIAS without assistive technologies, using only the keyboard. The element holding the focus is visually highlighted.

Info operating concept

For visually impaired persons, the basic structure of the pages is briefly explained to facilitate operation. ILIAS has different sections and page types:

  • All pages have a header with the installation title and user-related services: mail, chat, who's online, search, help, personal profile, and settings. On the left side is the main menu with the different entries. Click on an entry to open a sliding bar with more entries.
  • Dashboard provides access to learning content that is important to you and information about things you should not miss.
  • Magazine provides magazine - entry page direct access to the root node of the content tree. Under Recently Visited jumps to items listed which you used last. This is often helpful for quick navigation.
  • Personal workspace manages your very personal records.
  • Learning achievements contains the history and evidence of your learning activities.
  • Communication bundles services like mail, contacts, news and comments.
  • Organization shows a list of your collaborators and their learning progress.
  • The footer contains a link to the relevant page.

The link from the URL line is not stable. Here you can find the imprint and contact details of the technical support.

Dashboard

The page has a main column that lists all favorites and courses and groups you are a member of. You can click on the title of an item to open it. The page also has a side column where blocks of additional services such as to-dos, calendar, news and mail are offered.

Pages in the magazine

Pages in the magazine have breadcrumb navigation. Each page has the title of the object you are in. You can open listed objects by clicking on their title. Alternatively, you can navigate using a structure tree. The objects have a tab navigation, the tab navigation differs from object to object. The most important tabs are:

  • The Content tab is the most important for learning activities: here you will find the learning content. Some content tabs have a margin column with blocks of additional services like calendar or news.
  • The Info tab lists the metadata of the object, on this tab you start surveys and tests.
  • The Members tab shows people you work with together in this object.
  • If you have access to the Settings tab, then you can use forms to configure the object.
  • In the Progress tab you can see what processing status you have already reached.

Search

The search is located in the header at the top right. It can be accessed via a key combination. You can enter a keyword in the text input field. When you are in the magazine, you can choose to search the entire magazine or at your current position (as the object you are in and all the objects it contains). You can limit your search to user accounts to find a person. Your last search result is always linked and you can go back to it.
